How to knit an I-cord edge

Hey friends! For today’s Tips and Tricks Tuesday, I’m going to show you how to knit an I-cord edge.

A few people asked me how I got such a tidy looking edge on my new shawl design (work in progress), so I thought I’d share a quick tutorial.

Here’s how to work it:

On the right side: Knit 3, work in pattern until last 3 sts, slip 3 sts purlwise with yarn in back.

Wrong side: Purl 3 (pulling yarn snug), work in pattern until last 3 sts, slip 3 sts purlwise with yarn in front.

Then just repeat those two rows!

Duplicate Stitch Heart Tutorial

Happy Valentine’s Week, friends! It’s normal to celebrate for a whole week, right? I have a new tutorial for you just in time to whip up for V Day – how to add a duplicate stitch heart to a hat (or any piece of knitwear)!

How cute is this little double heart hat? It took me less than 20 minutes to add the hearts, so I know you can whip one up in no time! I knitted up a child sized beanie from my Basic Pom Pom Beanie pattern, which is available in sizes for newborn to adult, then added the duplicate stitch to the finished hat. The newborn size can be found for free here on my blog.

I have the step-by-step video posted below, and also the chart, which you may want to print off to have handy. When you sign up for my newsletter list below, I’ll send the printable PDF of the chart right to your inbox!

Here are a couple of tips and tricks for using duplicate stitch:

  • I like to work in columns, working from the top down. For this chart, I started with the far right side, 7 rounds above the brim.
  • You’ll want to start with bringing your yarn needle right through the middle of a stitch, from back to front. Think of your stitches as “V”s – your needle will go right through the center of a V.
  • Bring your yarn needle up and under both legs of the V above the stitch you’re duplicating, then back down into the center of the first V.
  • To work the next duplicate stitch, just pop your yarn needle down into the center of the V right below the one you just went through, and repeat the steps.
  • Keep an eye on your tension – try to keep your stitches loose and even.
