Daylight Breaking x The Sewing Box Magazine

Daylight Breaking shawl pattern for The Sewing Box Magazine
Daylight Breaking x The Sewing Box Magazine

Friends, I’ve been keeping a little secret for the past few months! I’m excited to finally spill the beans and tell you that I have a pattern featured in the latest issue of The Sewing Box Magazine! Meet the Daylight Breaking shawl!

Daylight Breaking is essentially the sequel to my Daylight Fading pattern. Daylight Breaking is slightly smaller in size (62 inches long), takes only 2 skeins of fingering weight yarn, features shorter sections, and improved increases and edge stitches.

I used my dear friend Ali from Explorer Knits and Fibers‘ beautiful hand dyed yarn for this project! I used her Denali Sock base (80% SWM/20% Nylon): 290 yds/265 m (1 skein) of Color A (Sweater Weather), 315 yds/288 m (1 skein) of Color B (Lavender Forever).

The Royal Shawl – We Are Knitters

The Royal Shawl - We Are Knitters knitting kit #knitting #knittingkit

I hope you all had a wonderful Mother’s Day weekend! I was so happy that my Royal Shawl from We Are Knitters was finally finished and blocked in time to wear on our blustery Mother’s Day. I swear spring is still taking it’s sweet time to arrive here in Michigan, but at least we can wear our cozy knits a bit longer!

I’ve been working on the Royal Shawl kit since… last fall? It got set aside when packing for our move and forgotten about for a bit.

It is such a fun, relaxing, “potato chippy” knit. If you’re looking for something to knitflix to, this definitely fits the bill!

The only modification I made was to the bind off to ensure it would stretch enough. I knit two stitches together through the back loop, then transferred the stitch on the right needle back to the left. And just kept repeating until all stitches were bound off.

This sucker is huge! Due to the already generous size before blocking, I chose to steam block it gently to keep it from growing much larger. I think that worked out well!

It’s such a cozy, versatile piece that I’m sure I’ll be wearing for years to come.

One Skein Wonder – Spring Project Ideas

One Skein Wonders shawl knitting pattern

Do you have a beautiful skein of yarn that you picked up on a whim with no projects in mind for it? When I’m traveling somewhere new and happen to visit a yarn shop, I love picking out a special skein (usually sock yarn) to remember my trip by.

Last year, I was lucky enough to attend the Our Maker Life meetup in Toronto where I got to spend a long weekend in a beautiful city with my fellow knitting and crocheting friends.

It was definitely a highlight of my year! A group of us visited some yarn shops in the area, and I just had to bring this soft skein of Manos Del Uruguay Fino home with me. With no projects in mind, of course.

It had been sitting there all winter, and I finally decided to make something with it. But what to make with one skein of fingering weight yarn?

I scoured Ravelry for hours, and decided to make the Reyna shawl by Noora Laivola – and I’m so glad I did!

It’s rare that I take time to make something for myself, from someone else’s pattern, and with simple repeats it was the perfect relaxing/tv binging project.

I used US 6 needles, and added one extra garter stitch section to the end since I had a lot of yarn to use up.

You can find the pattern here, and best of all, it’s free!

In my quest for the perfect one skein project, I rounded up a few more beautiful spring patterns and thought I’d share them with you.

You might be surprised at how far one skein of sock yarn can go!

Lillian June by Taiga Hilliard Designs
How darling is this little dress? It is on my “must make” list for Eleanor. There’s just something about little girls in hand knit dresses!

And So Are You by Rose Beck
This feminine shawlette is full of texture, and I’m in love with those pleats! It calls for a heavy fingering weight yarn, but any weight yarn can be used.

Rustling Leaves Beret by Alana Dakos
This beautiful beret looks so lightweight and perfect for spring. It would be a great stash buster, as it only uses 175 yards!

Whimsy Bonnet by Destiny Meyer
I hope you won’t mind, I threw one of my own patterns into the mix! I made this bonnet for Eleanor last spring and it was perfect for those blustery days. It uses just 73 – 120 yards, depending on size.

I hope these patterns have inspired you to dive into your own stash. Do you have a special skein of sock yarn waiting to be used? What will you make with it? I’d love to see! Feel free to tag me (@kniftyknittings) on Instagram or Facebook.
