Do you have a beautiful skein of yarn that you picked up on a whim with no projects in mind for it? When I’m traveling somewhere new and happen to visit a yarn shop, I love picking out a special skein (usually sock yarn) to remember my trip by.
Last year, I was lucky enough to attend the Our Maker Life meetup in Toronto where I got to spend a long weekend in a beautiful city with my fellow knitting and crocheting friends.
It was definitely a highlight of my year! A group of us visited some yarn shops in the area, and I just had to bring this soft skein of Manos Del Uruguay Fino home with me. With no projects in mind, of course.
It had been sitting there all winter, and I finally decided to make something with it. But what to make with one skein of fingering weight yarn?
I scoured Ravelry for hours, and decided to make the Reyna shawl by Noora Laivola – and I’m so glad I did!
It’s rare that I take time to make something for myself, from someone else’s pattern, and with simple repeats it was the perfect relaxing/tv binging project.
I used US 6 needles, and added one extra garter stitch section to the end since I had a lot of yarn to use up.

This beautiful beret looks so lightweight and perfect for spring. It would be a great stash buster, as it only uses 175 yards!
Whimsy Bonnet by Destiny Meyer
I hope you won’t mind, I threw one of my own patterns into the mix! I made this bonnet for Eleanor last spring and it was perfect for those blustery days. It uses just 73 – 120 yards, depending on size.
