Ooh friends, I’m so excited to share my latest pattern with you! The temps are getting quite chilly here in Michigan, so what a perfect time to introduce the Broken Rib Knit Mittens!

I wanted to make a mitten pattern that you could knit for any member of the family. The Broken Rib Knit Mittens is written in 5 sizes, from toddler to adult men’s! They feature a beautiful all-over broken rib pattern, which I just love.

Can we talk about this yarn, though? It uses Yarnspiration’s brand spankin new yarn called Patons Lincoln Fog! It’s a wool, acrylic and lincoln yarn blend with an almost mohair look and a super soft halo.

You will only need one skein for any of the five mitten sizes. You can find Lincoln Fog and the full free pattern PDF here. (Find the updated pattern here!)

This pattern uses the magic loop method, which is my favorite method for small circumference knitting. You could also knit these mittens with double pointed needles if you’d prefer.

Garter Rib Knit Scarf

Hey friends! I don’t know about you, but these fall Michigan winds have me pulling out all the cozy scarves and sweaters. If you’re on the hunt for a new cozy fall accessory, I have you covered! Meet my newest pattern in collaboration with Yarnspirations – the Garter Rib Knit Scarf!

The Garter Rib Knit Scarf is not only easy to knit (hello, two row repeat!), it’s extra cozy, easy to wear and features fun tassels at the corners!

I used Patons Alpaca Blend from my friends at Yarnspirations in this gorgeous colorway called Butternut. I mean, if this isn’t fall in a color I don’t know what is!

Patons Alpaca Blend is 60% acrylic, 22% wool, 10% nylon, 8% alpaca. I find that the Alpaca content gives it a wonderful softness, while it still has the durability of an acrylic blend. You can find all 20+ colors here, and you only need two skeins for this project!

Fun tip: If you love long scarves like I do, make your tassels first. Then just knit until you’re almost out of yarn (leave a little for that bind off, though).

Bobble Knit Throw Pillow

Happy Free Pattern Friday, friends! I’ve been so blown away by your response to the Bobble Knit Throw pattern I published last month, and I’m so excited for you to meet its throw pillow match!

The Bobble Knit Throw Pillow features the same diamond bobble pattern as the throw, making a perfect matching set! It is knit lengthwise and fits a 12″ by 20″ pillow insert for a modern look. It’s knit in the round as a tube, then the ends are seamed together. It’s just as easy to knit as the blanket, maybe even easier since there’s a lot less purling!

If you’ve already picked up your yarn for the throw blanket, then you’re all set! The throw uses about 3.5 skeins of Bernat Softee Chunky Big Ball (the 400g skein), and the pillow uses about half a skein. So with only 4 skeins you’ll have a matching set to cozy up your favorite spot!

Here’s what you’ll need:

Yarn

281 yds/257 m (1 skein) Bernat Softee Chunky Big Ball (431 yds/394 m per 14 oz/400 g ball) in Natural

Needles

US 11/8.0 mm 24 in circular needles
*Or size needed to obtain gauge

Notions

Tapestry needle for weaving in ends
12 in/30.5 cm x 20 in/51 cm pillow insert

Gauge

9 sts and 13 rows = 4 in/10 cm in Stockinette st (unblocked)

Size

12 in/30.5 cm x 20 in/51 cm

Abbreviations

CO – cast on
k – knit
MB – make bobble: kfbf (knit into the front, back and front of the next stitch), turn work and p3, turn again and k3, turn again and p3, turn once more and k3tog (knit 3 stitches together).
p – purl
pm – place marker
st(s) – stitch(es)

Pattern

Using the long tail method, CO 50 sts. Pm and join in the round, taking care not to twist sts.

Round 1: k around.

Begin Chart
Proceed to chart or follow written directions below. The chart shows even rows only. Directions within parenthesis are to be repeated five times per round.

Rounds 2 – 20 are worked 3 times:

Round 2: [k5, MB, k4] x 5
Round 3 (and all odd rows): k around.
Round 4: [k4, MB, k1, MB, k3] x 5
Round 6: [k3, MB, k3, MB, k2] x 5
Round 8: [k2, MB, k5, MB, k1] x 5
Round 10: [k1, MB, k7, MB] x 5

Round 12: [MB, k9] x 5
Round 14: [k1, MB, k7, MB] x 5
Round 16: [k2, MB, k5, MB, k1] x 5
Round 18: [k3, MB, k3, MB, k2] x 5
Round 20: [k4, MB, k1, MB, k3] x 5

Round 22: k5, MB, k4
Round 23: k around.

Finishing:

Bind off all sts. Cut yarn, leaving a long tail for seaming.

Thread a tapestry needle with the tail end of yarn. Holding the bound off edge together, insert the needle under both legs of a knit stitch next to the bound off edge (under both legs of the ‘V’). Next, insert the needle under both strands of the corresponding st from the front edge (the upside-down ‘V’). See video tutorial for demonstration.

Continue seaming until all edge sts are seamed, and weave in end. Place pillow insert inside cover and seam the cast on edge sts in the same manner.

To steam block, hold a steamer or iron with a steam setting a few inches away from the blanket, taking care not to touch the blanket with the iron, and steam.

When Yarnspirations asked if I’d design a pattern with one of their new yarns, I jumped at the chance! I chose Sugar Bush Crisp, a DK weight 100% extra fine merino yarn. It’s so soft, squishy and has excellent stitch definition. I knew it would make the perfect light weight hat as we start heading into spring. I chose the color Provincial Peach (you’ll need two skeins).

Double brim hats are very popular right now, and I wanted to design one with a more fitted brim that utilizes a provisional cast on. If you’ve never tried a provisional cast on, I’ve got you covered!

Let’s get started!

Yarn

Sugar Bush Crisp – 2 skeins; 166 yds/152 m
Color (Provincial Peach)

Needles

Size U.S. 6 [4 mm] circular knitting needle 16” [40.5 cm] long
Size U.S. 7 [4.5 mm] circular knitting needle 16” [40.5 cm] long
Set of 4 (or 5) size U.S. 7 [4.5 mm] double-pointed knitting needles
*or sizes needed to obtain gauge

Notions

Small amount of waste yarn
Set of 8 stitch markers
1 fur pom

Gauge

21 sts and 25 rnds = 4” [10 cm] in St st with larger needles.

Sizes

One: Adult – to fit 21-23 in [53.5-58.5 cm] head circumference

Abbreviations

K = Knit
K2tog = Knit next 2 stitches together
P = Purl
PM = Place marker
Rep = Repeat
Rnd(s) = Round(s)
St(s) = Stitch(es)

Brim:

With smaller circular needles, provisionally cast on 96 sts with waste yarn.

With working yarn, knit one row.

1^st rnd: PM and join in the round. Work in K1, P1 rib around.

Rep 1^st rnd until brim measures 5” [12.5 cm] from cast on edge.

Next rnd: Change to larger circular needles. Fold brim inwards and line up provisional cast on edge sts with live sts on the needles. *Remove waste yarn from provisional cast on to expose one live st and knit this st together with first st on left needle (see video). Rep from * around.

Body:

Continue working in Stockinette st (knit every rnd) until work from beginning measures 6” [15 cm].

Decreases:

1^st rnd: *K10. K2tog. PM. Rep from * around. 88 sts (8 markers placed).

2^nd rnd: Knit.

3^rd rnd: *K to 2 sts before marker. K2tog. Rep from * around. 80 sts.

Rep rnds 2 and 3 6 times more, until 32 sts remain.

Next rnd: K2tog around. 16 sts.

Cut yarn and draw tail through remaining sts. Cinch to close top of hat, and weave in all ends. Block if desired.
